Customer Review: Great Sequel
After the great success of ‘Disney Pixar Cars’ game last year, comes a sequel for next gen consoles. What’s great about that is it takes (almost) full advantage to the PS3 capabilities letting the player explore Radiator Springs & 2 other locations; Ornament Valley & Tailfin Pass. Now the reason why I said “almost” is the 3 locations are some what short, it’ll probably take less than 20mins to explore the whole area (of 1 location). But still, if you seen the film ‘Cars’, it plays closely to the layouts of the little town, so in other words, you’ve already familiar with the place. The graphics are stunning, everything is like the real world (surroundings and environments) yet kept the magical Pixar quality in the cars. The sound is great, especially the music. Some you’ve already heard if you watched the film or played the 1st ‘Cars’ game, but they also include a few energetic songs making it more a fun experience whilst racing. However when 1 song ends & another starts, that’s when a small glitch occurs. The game pauses just a slight whilst the song is changed, barely a second. The sequel, they introduce a heck alot of different stuff, many mini games, they are the following: - Ramone’s Rhythmic Rumble - which is very similar to dancing games, pressing corresponding buttons at the right time to make Ramone dance. - Tractor Tipping - much like the movie have demonstrated, honk at the tractors and tip them over whilst avoiding Frank. If you’re very good at stealth games, this is a synch for you guys. - Doc & The Law’s Race ‘N Chase - its basically the classic playground game tag, where you’re “it” & you gotta tag the other car & race back to your “home base”. - Fillmore’s Fuel Frenzy - it’s like a normal race, but you got to pick up fuel canisters & not let your gas run out. Its not about who finishes 1st place, its about who would survive the longest (with the amount of laps achieved). - Ghosting Mater - your task here is to scare Mater home, by directing him towards light spots (which boosts his speed temporarily) & not let him come to an halt. Simple? The trick is that the directional button is opposite; left = right & right = left. - Mike & Sulley’s Last Laugh - this mini game lets you use Mike (from ‘Monsters Inc.’) vs. fellow pal Sulley (in ‘Cars’ form) to beat each other in collecting laugh canisters scattered around the place. The best thing about this mini game is how close they manage make everything relevant to ‘Monsters Inc.’, for e.g. there are garage portals which leads you to another section in the area, this is paying to the homage of the closet doorway in the film. Want to play as Sulley? Don’t worry, there’s a race (in actaul fact, there’s 3) where you can use Monster Truck Sulley (only during arcade mode, not story mode). As for the race types, there are 5 types: - Town Race - Stadium Race - Rustbucket Race (racing against rusty cars) - Relay - Monster Truck Race Every game has a bad part, & the bad bit is that Sally the Porsche isn’t in the game…at all. Why is this bad? Well, since Sally is 1 of the most famous characters in last years film, you would expect she will be in it (the only thing that relates to her that’s in the game is her hotel cones). If you played the 1st game, such characters as Chick Hicks, Boost, Wingo & DJ isn’t in the game either. While the likes of the Sheriff & Snot Rod is in the game, but you either see them in cutscenes or during 1 or 2 rare races. With the lack of familiar characters, I guess they make it up for introducing new 1’s with Emma (small English rally car), Otto (German race car), Gudmund (Swedish mud rally car), Koji (Japanese drift car) & Geovanni (Italian Ferrari). So here are the playable characters (outside story mode): - ‘Lightning McQueen’ - ‘Doc Hudson’ - ‘Tow Mater’ - ‘Ramone’ - ‘Flo’ - ‘Luigi’ - ‘Sarge’ - ‘Fillmore’ - ‘Gudmund’ - ‘Geovanni’ - ‘Emma’ - ‘Otto’ - ‘Koji’ - ‘Mike’ (only in Mike & Sulley’s Last Laugh) - ‘Sulley’ (only in Mike & Sulley’s Last Laugh & Monster Truck race) - Monster ‘McQueen’ (only Monster Truck races) - Monster ‘Mater’ (only Monster Truck races) Powersliding in the 1st game proves to be too effective, but in this game proves a bit more harder & seemingly frustrating as you have to press way in advance before the turn. It’s quite hard when you get a left bend then a right bend after another. I think that’s why they introduce the tilt control but it only helps you on sharp bends. All this makes it increasingly hard to perform a 180 degree spin on right aways (which you need during Race n’ Chase mini game). A minor disadvantage is you’re unable to look behind you, actually, you can, but it’s hard & maybe not worth doing. To look behind you, to see how far you’re opponents are, you have to rotate the right analog stick, from top to bottom, sometimes it feels like you’re fighting the camera as it tries to reposition itself to view forward, & sometimes you just lift the camera to a birds eye view of your car. & finally, this isn’t ‘need for speed’ difficulty, so compared to other racing games, it’s pretty darn short in comparison (it took me 4 days to complete the game 100%, & I play it 3hrs a day). But if you take your time on the challenges & explore the area (admiring the view of the landscape), it should keep you pretty occupied for a few more hours. All in all, with these little niggling problems, there’s no reason why this game isn’t as good as the 1st. It really capture the essence of the Pixar quality.

Mercenaries 2 World in Flames (PS3)

Mercenaries 2 World in Flames (PS3)

If there really isn’t any such thing as bad publicity then Mercenaries 2 is already doing superbly. It certainly already has its fair share of infamy, after being denounced by the Venezuelan government as propaganda for the U.S. Army and even dragging Bono (who part owns developer Pandemic) into a row over its probity. Mind you North Korea weren’t too keen about the first game either and that turned out all right.

The reason poor Bono’s name has been dragged into the dirt is that the game’s plot revolves around a U.S. led invasion of Venezuela after a dictator takes control in a coup. It’s pretty hard to get offended about a game as gleefully silly as this though as its interests are clearly not politics but simply blowing things up as creatively as possible. As before you’re dropped into the war zone and free to ply your mercenary trade with whomever you want. However, this time you’re in charge of your own PMC (Private Military Company) and get to set up your own base and recruit your own soldiers.

Owning your own PMC gives you a lot more control over how exactly you play the game in what is essentially Grand Theft Auto in a warzone. Everything you see can be completely destroyed from innocuous shrubbery to be the biggest buildings. You can now swim as well and there’s lot more vehicles and gadgets, from helicopters to grappling hooks. With an online co-op mode as well even Hugo Ch?vez couldn’t fail to be entertained (maybe).

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell:?Double Agent (PS3) Customer Review: One of the worst games I’ve played
I was sorely disappointed by this game. Having shelled out about ?30 for this I had expected better. To be honest, I have never been a huge fan of the series, although the original had a few segments of great gameplay. Depite this, I really thought that the developers would take this to a new level with the advent of the PS3. They didn’t. What results is certainly the most annoying game I have ever played. This is not down to it being difficult (although it is not easy), but more down to the fact that the controls are terrible. Although they are fairly intuitive after you’ve got used to them, they are extremely sluggish, to the point where the game really isn’t doing what you tell it to do. Not helpful when split-second timing is important to take down an enemy without triggering alerts. The ‘training’ seemed like a mission to me and as such didn’t teach me very much. If the training doesn’t tell you how to play the game, why not just get straight to it? The lighting effects are not great. Sometimes you can have a thisck concrete wall and a thick layer of ‘darkness’ between you and the enemy and still get detected. Other times you can be in full view in the light, inches away from them with them facing you and they don’t see you! Not good in a game supposedly focussing on stealth. I must admit that when the game does allow you to creep up on an enemy and grab them (sometimes the enemies have eyes in the backs of their heads, even in the pitch dark), knowing that you have a choice in what to do with them is great fun. Except that you’re not really allowed to kill them… This is probably all that kept me playing. There are also different endings base on how you play the game. Normally great, but bear in mind that, despite this, the levels are very linear. Also, having completed it once, I don’t really want to play this game again! Finally, what’s with the loading and saving? The PS3 is normally exceptionally quick at both, which is one of it’s many fantastic features. However, this game is different. Loading screens take a LONG time. Normally, one loading screen will then be followed by another loading screen! I’m not joking! The saving also takes a VERY long time. I’m not sure why. If you are a fan of the series, I would imagine the PS2 version is exactly the same, but undoubtedly cheaper- bear in mind that the PS3 does upscale PS2 games with the premium version. I’m sure the graphics couldn’t be much more bland and the gameplay is sluggish anyway! If not, Metal Gear Solid does look as though it’s going to blow everything away in the stealth games department. SCDA is NOT a good stopgap in the meantime. I’d advise just waiting.
Customer Review: Awful port - buy the Xbox 360 version instead.
The difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions is staggering. The PS3 version has extremely poor graphics, poor sound, a jittery framerate and such dreadful lighting effects it actually affects the gameplay in places.

In the very first level, there’s a point where you’re expected to approach a staircase that looks as if it’s in darkness. However, as you approach it, the lighting effect that you should have seen illuminating the bottom of the staircase starts fading in until you see that the staircase is lit from above by a lamp. If you back away again, you see the lighting effect fade away again. For a game in which the placement of lights is so critical to the gameplay, this is unforgivable. The Xbox 360 doesn’t have this problem - you can see the light from way off, halfway across the level… which is what you would expect in real life.

Another problem is with the sound, which sometimes lags behind the gameplay. And throughout, the framerate is horribly unstable and many of the impressive special graphical effects from the Xbox 360 version are missing.

Now, I know the PS3 is capable of better than this because I have played other PS3 games and demos that far exceed the Xbox 360 version of this particular game. So what we have here is a lazy port, in which the developers simply ported the code across to PS3, but rather than optimising it, simply took away special effects until it was vaguely playable.

If you buy this for the PS3, you are simply encouraging this lazy practice so, if you really really must play this game, I urge you to buy the Xbox 360 version instead. To be honest, I just returned this game to the store and continued to enjoy those few PS3 games that actually show what the system can do… there’s no way I’m buying an Xbox 360.
